Update on housing delivery from The Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government
Given the predominance of COVID-19 coverage in the media at present, you might have missed that Robert Jenrick, The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government gave a speech in the House of Commons on Thursday.
Building on the spending commitments on housing by the Government in the Budget and alongside the publication of ‘Planning for the Future’, which details proposals for planning reform, Mr Jenrick gave a little more information on how his department proposed to support housing delivery including reviewing the formula for calculating local housing need and increasing building in urban areas, in particular around transport hubs, such as train stations. He also reiterated a commitment to bringing forward brownfield sites for development, with the launch of the Brownfield Register due next month.
He addressed the need for the planning system to be ‘dramatically accelerated’, to reform planning fees and set a deadline of 2023 for all Local Plans to be in place.
