Seeing More After Dark: Our New Bat Survey Technology

As we prepare for the 2026 bat survey season, we are pleased to announce a significant upgrade to our bat survey equipment. The new technology includes high-specification thermal imaging and night-vision systems, enabling our ecologists to detect, observe, and record bat activity more effectively during surveys. These tools provide greater visibility in low-light conditions and can help identify bat movements that may otherwise be difficult to observe using traditional survey methods alone.

This investment reflects ongoing advances in ecological survey techniques, as well as recent guidance that highlights the benefits of using night-vision aids during bat emergence and re-entry surveys. The use of thermal imaging and night-vision technology can improve survey accuracy, increase confidence in survey findings, and help minimise disturbance to bats and their roosts. In addition, our equipment includes full-spectrum acoustic recording devices, allowing us to collect high-quality audio data to support species identification and activity assessments.
