Level 1 Bat Licence Training

At Optimis Consulting, we offer a full range of bat surveys to support development projects. To offer the best skillset and experience to our clients I recently attended a training course organised by ER Training Ltd, which was designed to further my understanding of bat ecology and develop the practical skills needed to obtain a Level 1 Bat Licence.

The course took place in Weston Longville, Norfolk and was spread across six engaging sessions. We began with an introduction to UK bat species, learning key tips for identifying roosting bats. The second session explored the legislation and conservation status of the UK bat species. Sessions three and four focused on bat roosts, building inspections, and emergence surveys, which prepared us for the practical work that followed.

The surveys took place at a church in Swanton Morley, where we examined the structure for potential roost features (PRF’s). As dusk fell, we conducted the emergence survey and were fortunate enough to spot natterers bats (Myotis nattereri) emerging from crevices in the ceiling.

The following day we moved on to session five, which focused on assessing trees for their roosting potential. We visited a nearby woodland, surveying a variety of trees to evaluate their suitability for bats.

The course wrapped up with a final session on the Level 1 Bat Licence and how to apply it in practice. This was followed by a brief assessment to consolidate everything we’d learned.

Overall, the course was both informative and enjoyable. It not only prepared me for my Level 1 Bat Licence application but also equipped me with valuable knowledge and practical skills that will enhance the bat surveys we carry out here at Optimis Consulting.
